Need a New York Highway Use Tax permit? NYHUT.com makes the process fast, accurate, and easy.

Start by clicking Start Your Order. Enter your USDOT number and click Lookup. Our lookup tool automatically fills much of your company information, saving time, reducing typing, and helping prevent mistakes.

Next, enter your vehicle identification number, or VIN, and click Decode VIN. Our system automatically identifies your vehicle's year, make, and model.

Review your company information, vehicle information, and selected permit service. If everything looks correct, continue to secure checkout.

Once payment is complete, your order enters our processing workflow. You will receive your completed permit by email, and a copy will be placed in your My NYHUT customer portal.

If you operate a commercial truck in New York, you may need a Highway Use Tax permit before entering the state.

In general, New York HUT requirements apply to trucks, tractors, and other self-propelled commercial vehicles with a gross weight over 18,000 pounds.

Some vehicles and operations may qualify for an exemption, so vehicle weight alone does not always determine the answer.

Regular New York operation generally requires regular HUT registration, a certificate of registration, and a vehicle decal. A temporary HUT trip certificate may be an alternative for occasional trips.

Regular HUT registration is intended for carriers operating qualifying vehicles in New York on an ongoing basis.

The vehicle receives a certificate of registration and a decal. The carrier may also be responsible for quarterly Highway Use Tax returns.

A temporary HUT trip certificate is intended for occasional qualifying New York operation. New York states that it expires at midnight on the third day after the date it was issued, and the expiration printed on the issued certificate controls.

New York limits a carrier to a maximum of ten HUT trip certificates per calendar year, and trip certificates are not available for vehicles transporting automotive fuel.

The temporary certificate does not establish an ongoing HUT account, provide a permanent decal, or create a recurring quarterly filing requirement by itself.

Before ordering a New York HUT permit, gather a few important pieces of information.

Have your company's USDOT number ready, along with the VIN, license plate number and state, vehicle year, make, and registered weight.

You will also need the name, email address, and telephone number of the person we should contact if additional information is required.

If government records do not match, New York may request supporting documentation such as an IRS CP-575 notice.
