How to add a vehicle to an existing NY HUT account
Carriers with an established New York Highway Use Tax account often need to register additional trucks as the fleet changes. Adding a vehicle is a vehicle-registration action under the existing account; it is not the same as renewing the account or replacing a lost credential.
Confirm that the HUT account is active
Before adding a truck, confirm that the carrier's existing HUT account is active and in good standing. An account discrepancy, overdue filing, or unresolved tax balance can delay vehicle registration.
The legal business name and taxpayer information should match the records maintained by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.
Prepare the new vehicle information
Accurate vehicle information is required so the new credential is associated with the correct truck.
- ✓USDOT number and existing NY HUT account information
- ✓Vehicle identification number (VIN)
- ✓Unit number, year, make, and model
- ✓Plate number and plate state
- ✓Registered gross weight and other requested weight details
- ✓Axle and vehicle configuration information when requested
Adding a vehicle is not a replacement
A replacement service is used when an existing credential or decal has been lost, damaged, or needs to be reissued for the same registered vehicle. A newly acquired or newly operated truck must be added as its own vehicle record.
Do not move a decal from one truck to another. Vehicle-specific credentials should remain associated with the vehicle record for which they were issued.
Keep the fleet inventory current
Fleet managers should maintain a current list of active vehicles, certificate numbers, decal status, and expiration information. The My NYHUT portal is being developed to make this easier for returning customers.

Common questions about this topic
Can I add a truck without creating a new HUT account?
Generally, an additional qualifying vehicle is registered under the carrier's existing active HUT account rather than creating a separate account for the truck.
Is adding a vehicle the same as renewing?
No. Renewal applies to an existing registration cycle. Adding a vehicle creates a vehicle record and credential under the existing account.
Can I transfer a decal from an old truck?
Vehicle-specific credentials should not be transferred to a different truck. The new vehicle should be properly added and credentialed.
